Tourism is the major driver of the local economy, with Byron the second most popular destination in Australia.
There needs to be a better balance between tourism and the financial burden it creates on the relatively small number of Shire ratepayers so that we have the resources to create better infrastructure. We will use our extensive experience and contacts within State and Federal Governments to secure appropriate funding for this purpose.
Our Actions:
- Conduct a forensic audit of Council finances and funding priorities.
- Determine why the Office of Local Government (OLG) has determined Byron Shire Council as significantly underperforming against other Councils.
